Description
Experience a delightful twist on a classic with this Perfect Salted Caramel Apple Pie, featuring spiced apples, gooey salted caramel, and a flaky crust.
Ingredients
2 unbaked pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)
6 large crisp apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled and thinly sliced
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salted caramel sauce
1 large egg beaten with 1 tbsp milk (egg wash)
1 tsp coarse sea salt
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400F (200C) and place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
In a spacious bowl, combine the apple slices with lemon juice, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour, tossing gently until everything is nicely coated.
Arrange half of the apple mixture in the bottom crust, generously drizzle with 1/4 cup of the salted caramel sauce, then add the rest of the apples and finish with the remaining caramel sauce.
Place the second pie crust on top, seal the edges by crimping, and create four vent slits in the center.
Brush the top crust with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
Bake at 400F (200C) for 20 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 375F (190C) and continue baking for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Allow the pie to cool entirely on a wire rack for at least 3 hours before serving.
Notes
For even cooking, aim for thinly and uniformly sliced apples. This helps them soften nicely without turning to mush.
Make sure to spread the caramel sauce in distinct layers rather than mixing it all in with the apples. This creates pockets of intense caramel flavor.
A good crimp not only looks pretty but also helps seal in the juices, preventing them from leaking out during baking.
Look for a beautifully golden-brown crust and listen for the gentle bubbling of the filling. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent the pie with aluminum foil.
