Create delightful Sweet Sugar Cookie Cutouts, perfect for decorating and any celebration. These tender cookies are a versatile canvas for your creativity, topped with a vibrant, smooth easy glaze.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1.5 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
Easy Glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar, 3 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp light corn syrup, food coloring
Instructions
Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture on low speed until a smooth dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
Divide the dough into two equal disks. Wrap each disk tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Preheat your oven to 350F (175C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out desired shapes.
Arrange the cut-out cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between them.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cookies cool, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and light corn syrup in a bowl until smooth. Add food coloring as desired and stir until evenly distributed.
Once the cookies are completely cool, decorate them with the easy sugar glaze. Let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
Ensure your butter is truly softened, not melted. It should yield to gentle pressure from your finger but still hold its shape. This is key for achieving that light and fluffy texture when creaming with sugar.
Once you add the flour, mix just until combined. Overmixing can develop the gluten in the flour, leading to tougher cookies.
For uniform baking, try to roll your dough to an even 1/4-inch thickness. This ensures all your cookies bake at the same rate.
Allow cookies to cool completely before glazing. Warm cookies will melt the glaze and can make them crumble.
