Description
The ultimate stress-free, decadent breakfast. By allowing hearty bread to soak in a spiced custard overnight, you create a dish that is part French toast and part bread pudding, featuring a vibrant layer of sweet cherry pie filling.
Ingredients
- 20 slices day-old deli bread (French bread)
- 4 large eggs
- 2/3 cup evaporated milk
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 15 oz canned cherry pie filling
Instructions
Whisk: Combine eggs, evaporated milk, brown sugar, and cinnamon until the sugar is dissolved.
Assemble: Place 20 slices of day-old bread into a greased 13×9-inch dish. Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring every slice is coated.
Soak: Spread cherry pie filling over the top. Cover tightly and refrigerate for 8–12 hours (overnight).
Bake: Place the cold dish into a COLD oven. Set temperature to 350°F. Bake for 35 minutes until the center is set and the top is bubbling.
Serve: Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with optional extra cherry topping.
Notes
Cold Oven Start: To prevent glass or ceramic dishes from shattering, do not preheat. Placing a chilled dish into a cold oven allows it to heat up safely.
The Bread Factor: Stale or day-old bread is required to soak up the custard without turning into mush.
Evaporated Milk Tip: Using evaporated milk creates a much creamier texture than regular milk due to its lower water content, preventing a soggy base.
