Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup water
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup unsalted butter (for icing)
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for icing)
6 tbsp whole milk
3.5 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract (for icing)
Instructions
Prepare your oven by preheating it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and greasing a 15×10 inch baking pan.
Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
Heat one cup of butter, water, and cocoa powder in a saucepan until boiling, then pour this mixture over the dry ingredients and stir thoroughly.
Mix together the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla, then incorporate them into the cake batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20 minutes.
While the cake is baking, make the frosting by bringing the remaining butter, cocoa powder, and milk to a boil in a saucepan, then removing it from the heat and whisking in the powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
Drizzle the warm frosting over the warm cake as soon as it comes out of the oven, spread it evenly, and allow it to set before serving.
Notes
Don’t overmix the batter once you add the wet ingredients to the dry. A gentle mix until just combined ensures a tender cake.
For the best results, measure your flour and cocoa powder correctly. Spooning them into the measuring cup and leveling off is ideal.
Make sure your 15×10 inch pan is thoroughly greased to prevent the cake from sticking. A light dusting of cocoa powder after greasing can also help.
Keep an eye on the cake as it bakes. A 20-minute bake time is usually perfect, but ovens can vary. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.
Drizzling the frosting on a warm cake allows it to melt slightly and create that wonderful, integrated texture. It’s a key step for this specific recipe!
