Ingredients
1.5 lbs lean ground beef
1 large yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 small head green cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
1 can (14.5 oz) diced fire-roasted tomatoes
1 cup cooked long-grain white rice
1 tbsp Italian seasoning
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Warm your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a generous 9×13 inch baking dish with a light greasing.
In a hot skillet, brown your ground beef with the diced onion for about 6 to 8 minutes, then carefully drain away any extra grease.
Stir in the minced garlic, Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper, cooking for just one minute until fragrant.
Gently mix in the tomato sauce, fire-roasted diced tomatoes, pre-cooked rice, and about half of your chopped cabbage.
Arrange the rest of the chopped cabbage in the base of your prepared baking dish, then top with the savory beef and tomato mixture, giving it a gentle stir to combine.
Seal the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes, allowing the cabbage to become wonderfully soft and tender.
Remove the foil and generously sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top, baking uncovered for another 10 minutes until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly.
Notes
Using lean ground beef helps keep this casserole from becoming too greasy while still providing that rich, savory base.
Fresh green cabbage is key here. It softens beautifully in the oven, becoming wonderfully tender and absorbing all the delicious flavors of the sauce
