Description
This Cozy Cabbage and Kielbasa Bake is a wonderfully comforting dish, perfect for those chilly evenings when you crave something hearty and flavorful. It brings together the savory goodness of kielbasa with tender, slightly sweet cabbage and a hint of smoky spice, all topped with a luscious blanket of melted cheddar cheese.
Ingredients
1 lb smoked beef kielbasa or turkey kielbasa, cut into 1/2-inch coins
1 medium head green cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
3 tbsp olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp caraway seeds
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
First, warm your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a spacious bowl, combine the chopped green cabbage, sliced onion, minced garlic, olive oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, caraway seeds, salt, and black pepper, ensuring everything is nicely coated.
Gently mix in the sliced kielbasa coins.
Pour this delightful mixture into your prepared baking dish and cover it securely with foil.
Bake for 35 minutes, then take off the foil, give it a good stir, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese, and bake uncovered for another 10 to 15 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Notes
Ensure your oven is fully preheated before placing the dish inside. This helps the cabbage begin to soften right away, leading to a more tender result.
Try to chop your cabbage and onion into relatively uniform, bite-sized pieces. This ensures they cook at the same rate.
While this is a one-dish meal, make sure your baking dish isn’t packed too tightly. This allows for better circulation of heat, resulting in more evenly cooked cabbage.
After the initial 35 minutes of covered baking, you can easily test the cabbage for tenderness by poking it with a fork. It should yield with little resistance.
For a perfectly bubbly and golden cheese topping, keep an eye on it during the last few minutes of uncovered baking. If it’s browning too quickly, you can loosely tent it with foil.
