Classic Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

Classic Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

  • Total Time: 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • Yield: 1 pie 1x

Description

This classic homemade apple pie recipe features tender, spiced apples encased in a flaky, golden crust, offering a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

1 double pie crust (top and bottom dough, homemade or store-bought)
6 cups peeled and thinly sliced crisp apples (Honeycrisp and Granny Smith)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water (egg wash)
1 tbsp coarse sanding sugar

Instructions

Prepare your oven to 400F and place the bottom pie crust in your pie dish.
Mix the sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until everything is nicely coated.
Gently place the apple filling into the crust, then cover with the top crust, sealing the edges.
Make a few slits in the top crust, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake for 20 minutes at 400F, then reduce heat to 375F and bake for another 35-40 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Let it cool for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

This includes both the bottom and top dough. You can absolutely make your own from scratch for that extra special touch, or a good quality store-bought crust works beautifully too.
We’re looking for apples that hold their shape and have a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Honeycrisp and Granny Smith are a fantastic pairing, offering both crispness and a lovely tang.
