Brown Butter Mashed Potatoes

Brown Butter Mashed Potatoes

  • Total Time: Approx. 30-40 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings 1x

Description

Elevate your classic mashed potatoes with the rich, nutty flavor of browned butter. These creamy, deeply flavorful mashed potatoes are a sophisticated twist that will make any meal extraordinary.

Ingredients

Scale

3 lbs potatoes (russet, red, or golden (about 10–12 medium size), cut into 1–1.5 size pieces)
8 tbsp butter
1 cup milk (warmed plus additional if needed)
1 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp pepper

Instructions

Place cut potatoes in a large pot, add water, and swirl to release starch. Drain and rinse the potatoes. Return them to the pot and cover with fresh water.

Bring water to a gentle boil uncovered. Cook until potatoes are very tender, about 15-25 minutes.

While potatoes cook, brown butter in a skillet until deeply golden brown. Once foamy and golden, remove from heat.

Drain cooked potatoes thoroughly and return them to the hot pot. Let them sit uncovered for 5 minutes to dry out.

Add the browned butter, salt, and pepper to the pot. Use hand beaters (turned off) to manually mash the potatoes, incorporating the butter and seasonings. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.

Turn on the beaters and mix until mostly mashed with small chunks remaining. Pour in 1 cup of milk and blend until the desired consistency is reached, adding more milk if necessary.

Notes

Don’t over-boil: Keep an eye on your potatoes as they boil. You want them perfectly tender, but not so soft that they disintegrate into mush. A fork should slide in easily.

The power of drying: That 5-minute resting period for the drained potatoes is non-negotiable! It’s the secret to avoiding watery mashed potatoes and achieving that ideal fluffy texture.

Gentle mashing: When you first add the butter and seasonings, a manual mash with turned-off beaters or even a potato masher helps to break things down without overworking the starches, which can make potatoes gummy.

Warm your milk: Always warm your milk before adding it to the potatoes. This keeps the potatoes hot and helps the milk blend in smoothly for ultimate creaminess.

Taste and adjust: Your taste buds are your best guide. Always taste your mashed potatoes before serving and add more salt or pepper as needed.
