Adorable Chocolate Spider Cupcakes Recipe

Adorable Chocolate Spider Cupcakes Recipe

  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Yield: 24 cupcakes 1x

Description

Adorable Chocolate Spider Cupcakes are a spooktacularly fun and easy Halloween treat. These moist chocolate cupcakes are topped with creamy frosting and decorated to look like cute spiders using Oreo cookies and pretzel twists.

Ingredients

Scale

1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix (plus water, oil, and eggs per package)
1 tub (16 oz) chocolate frosting
24 Oreo cookies
48 mini candy eyeball decorations
144 mini pretzel twists or chow mein noodles (for spider legs)
1/2 cup melted black or dark chocolate

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and prepare two 12-cup muffin tins with liners.

Mix the chocolate cake batter as directed on the box, fill the muffin cups, and bake for 18-20 minutes. Let them cool completely.

Generously frost the cooled cupcakes with chocolate frosting.

Break pretzel twists into small curved pieces, aiming for 8 “legs” for each cupcake.

Gently insert 4 pretzel legs into each side of an Oreo cookie. You can use a little melted chocolate to help them stick if necessary.

Place the Oreo cookie with attached legs onto the center top of each frosted cupcake, like a spider’s body.

Use tiny dabs of frosting or melted chocolate to attach two candy eyeballs to the top of each Oreo, and allow them to set.

Notes

Never frost a warm cupcake! Patience is rewarded here with neat, clean frosting that holds decorations perfectly.

When inserting the pretzel legs into the Oreo, be gentle. You want them to stand out nicely without breaking the cookie. If using pretzel twists, the curve naturally looks like legs.

For the most secure eyeballs, use a small dab of melted chocolate rather than frosting. It sets up quickly and firmly.

If your frosting seems too stiff, you can warm it very slightly for a few seconds in the microwave or stir in a teaspoon of milk to make it more spreadable. If it’s too soft, pop it in the fridge for a few minutes to firm up.

For a more uniform look, you can use a piping bag with a round tip to frost the cupcakes. This gives you a perfectly smooth dome, ideal for placing the spider bodies.
