30 Minute Ground Turkey Skillet

30 Minute Ground Turkey Skillet

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A wholesome, comforting dinner that practically cooks itself, this 30 Minute Ground Turkey Skillet combines savory turkey, tender green beans, and fluffy rice in a fragrant tomato-based sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 lb. lean ground turkey
1 small sweet onion (diced)
2 cloves garlic (minced)
15 oz. can diced tomatoes (undrained)
6 oz. fresh green beans (cut into 2-inch pieces (about 1½ cups))
1½ cups uncooked short or long grain white rice
2½ cups low sodium chicken broth
1 tsp coarse salt
¼ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp dried Italian herbs
1/8 tsp cracked red pepper flakes
2 tsp grainy mustard
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

1. Heat olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and diced onion. Sauté, breaking up the turkey into crumbles, until the turkey is no longer pink and the onion is soft, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 20 seconds. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain off any excess fat, then return the skillet to the heat.

2. Stir in the diced tomatoes, green beans, uncooked rice, chicken broth, coarse salt, black pepper, garlic powder, Italian herbs, red pepper flakes, grainy mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

3. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover the skillet with a lid, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 20-22 minutes, or until the rice is cooked through and tender.

4. Remove the skillet from the heat. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t rush the browning process. Allowing the turkey and onions to sauté for the full time ensures a savory base that elevates the entire dish.

Use a large enough skillet. A wide surface area allows the liquid to evaporate at the right rate, keeping the rice from becoming too mushy.

Check the green beans. If you prefer them very soft, you can add them at the very start of the simmer, but adding them with the rice ensures they keep a bit of their beautiful structure.

Let it rest. After removing the skillet from the heat, let it sit covered for 2 or 3 minutes before serving. This helps the rice finish steaming perfectly.
