Ingredients
The Brown Butter Base
- 1 cup salted butter (divided)
- 1 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup real maple syrup & 1/4 cup apple butter
- 1 egg, 2 tsp vanilla
Dry Ingredients & Mix-ins
- 2 1/3 cups flour, 1 tsp baking powder
- 0.5 tsp cinnamon, 0.5 tsp salt
- 1 cup chocolate chips, 1/2 cup chopped pecans
The Stovetop Maple Glaze
- 3 tbsp butter, 3 tbsp maple syrup
- 1/2 – 3/4 cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
Brown: Brown 1.5 sticks of butter until amber. Stir in remaining 0.5 stick cold butter. Cool 5 mins.
Wet: Add sugar, syrup, apple butter, egg, and vanilla; beat until creamy.
Mix: Fold in dry ingredients, chocolate chips, and pecans.
Bake: Spread into a 9×13 pan. Bake at 350°F for 18–22 mins (center should look slightly doughy).
Glaze: Melt butter and syrup; whisk in sugar and vanilla. Drizzle over bars while warm.
Notes
The ‘Doughy’ Secret: Pull the bars early to allow carry-over cooking to set them into a fudge-like texture.
Apple Butter Magic: This concentrated fruit reduction provides immense moisture and deep autumnal flavor.
Butter Browning: Use a light-colored pan to monitor the transition from amber to burnt, which happens in seconds.
