Ingredients
For the Dipping Sauce
2 cups low-sodium beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp soy sauce
1 garlic clove, minced
½ tsp black pepper
For the Toppings & Burgers
1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 tbsp olive oil
4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
4 brioche buns
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Savory Dipping Sauce
In a small saucepan, combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low to keep it warm and allow the flavors to meld while you prepare the burgers.
Caramelize Onions & Sauté Mushrooms
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until they are soft, sweet, and golden brown. Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and continue to cook until they are browned and tender. Season the mixture with salt and pepper, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
Cook the Beef Patties
Gently form the ground beef into four equal-sized patties. Press a slight indent into the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up during cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper. Cook the patties in a hot skillet over medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the final minute of cooking, place a slice of provolone cheese on top of each patty to melt.
Assemble Your Gourmet Burger
Lightly toast the inside of the brioche buns. Place a cooked cheeseburger patty on each bottom bun. Top generously with the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture. Place the top bun on and serve immediately with the warm dipping sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
Choosing the Right Beef
An 80/20 ground beef blend is essential for a juicy, flavorful burger. A leaner blend can result in a dry patty.
Prevent a Soggy Bun
To create a barrier against the juice, spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the toasted insides of your buns.
Enhance Your Dipping Sauce
For a deeper, restaurant-quality flavor, add a small splash of balsamic glaze or a dash of red wine to the dipping sauce while it simmers.
Creative Variations
Feel free to add a spicy kick with sliced jalapeños or pepper jack cheese. For a more aromatic burger, mix a pinch of dried thyme or rosemary into the ground beef before forming the patties.
